What makes a photograph speak beyond the surface? How can personal narratives intersect with today’s social and political realities?
From Headlines to Heartlines is a photography and visual storytelling workshop led by renowned photojournalist Beawiharta. With over 25 years of experience, he guides participants to reflect on their projects with clarity and purpose—showing how personal stories can engage with broader social and political realities. Through open discussions and hands-on exploration, the workshop helps participants craft meaningful visual narratives. It also serves as a prelude to his public talk, The Personal is Political, where photography becomes both personal expression and political statement.
In this intimate workshop, senior photojournalist Beawiharta—whose career spans over 25 years—invites participants to reexamine their photography projects with clarity, honesty, and relevance. Drawing from his deep experience documenting pivotal moments in Indonesia’s history and witnessing the evolution of visual media, Beawiharta offers valuable insights on how storytelling can bridge the personal and the political.

Participants will be guided through a reflective process to uncover the core ideas behind their visual work, while exploring how personal perspectives can become powerful tools for addressing broader societal themes. With an emphasis on visual storytelling, the workshop will introduce strategies for translating ideas into emotionally resonant and contextually grounded photo narratives. Beawiharta will also touch on the challenges and possibilities of adapting visual stories across different mediums in today’s digital landscape, encouraging a flexible and responsive approach to narrative form.
